How to Calculate a Weighted Grade

A weighted grade calculator helps when different parts of a class count for different percentages of the final grade. Homework, quizzes, exams, projects, labs, participation, and the final exam may each have their own weight in the syllabus.

The Weighted Grade Formula

Weighted Grade = (Category Score × Category Weight) + ... divided by the total weight entered.

If your syllabus adds up to 100%, the result is your course grade. If you have only entered completed categories so far, CalcMyGrades normalizes the result across the weights entered and also shows how much weight remains.

Example Weighted Grade

  1. Homework: 92% score, worth 25% of the course.
  2. Exams: 84% score, worth 50% of the course.
  3. Projects: 95% score, worth 25% of the course.

The weighted grade is (92 × 25) + (84 × 50) + (95 × 25), divided by 100. That equals 88.75%.

When to Use This Calculator

Use the grade calculator when your class grade is built from multiple assignment categories. Use the final grade calculator when you already know your current course grade and only need to know what score you need on the final exam.

Frequently Asked Questions

What if my weights do not add to 100%?

If you are partway through a class, your completed categories may not add to 100% yet. The calculator still shows a normalized current average and tells you how much weight remains. If your full syllabus weights add to more than 100%, check for extra credit or category rules before relying on the result.

Should I enter points or percentages?

This calculator is designed for percentages. If your class uses points, divide the points earned by the points possible for each category, then enter that percentage.

Can one low exam ruin my grade?

It depends on the exam weight and the remaining coursework. A low score in a category worth 10% is much easier to recover from than the same score in a category worth 50%. The target grade outlook shows the average you need on remaining work.

Category Weights vs. Individual Assignments

Many gradebooks show individual assignments, while the syllabus explains category weights. For example, ten homework assignments might combine into one Homework category worth 20% of the course. In that case, first find your average within the Homework category, then enter that category average and its weight.

How Dropped Assignments Affect the Calculation

If your teacher drops the lowest quiz or replaces the lowest exam, do not include the dropped score in the category average. Recalculate the category score after the drop rule is applied, then enter the adjusted percentage into the calculator.

Quick Weighted Grade Checklist

  • Use category weights from the syllabus, not guesswork.
  • Make sure all full-course weights add to 100% unless extra credit is involved.
  • Enter percentages rather than raw points.
  • Separate completed categories from remaining categories when planning ahead.
  • Review gradebook rounding rules before making high-stakes decisions.
