How to Calculate College GPA

College GPA is calculated by converting each letter grade into grade points, multiplying those grade points by the course credits, adding the quality points together, and dividing by the total GPA-eligible credits. Grades such as P, NP, W, and I do not carry grade points, so CalcMyGrades excludes them from both the quality point total and the credit denominator.

How to Calculate High School GPA

High school GPA is calculated by converting each letter grade into grade points, adding the GPA-eligible grade points together, and dividing by the number of GPA-eligible classes. Because high school classes usually count equally, the High School GPA calculator does not use a credits column. Grades such as P, NP, W, and I are excluded because they do not carry grade points.

Weighted vs. Unweighted GPA

Weighted GPA applies only to high school calculations. Unweighted GPA measures every class on the same grading scale. Weighted GPA adds extra value for more rigorous courses, which helps reflect the added difficulty of advanced coursework. CalcMyGrades shows both values so students can compare their baseline academic average with the impact of weighted classes. Honors classes commonly add 0.5 grade points, while AP or IB classes commonly add 1.0 grade point. For example, an A in a regular class may count as 4.0, an A in Honors may count as 4.5, and an A in AP or IB may count as 5.0.
